Regulated by the Bank of Tanzania, Tanzania Commercial Bank, formerly TPB Bank Plc, is a licensed commercial bank. The bank's origins can be found in the Tanganyika Post Office Savings Bank, which was founded under British colonial control in 1925 and started running in 1927. Originally part of the postal system, it sought to offer the public fundamental financial services.
The Tanzania Postal Bank Act No. 11 of 1991 changed the bank into a separate organization apart from the Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation following Tanzania's move from Ujamaa to a liberal economic framework. This let the bank start making money for the government and widen its services.
The bank management said in 2015 that they intended to list the bank on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange to generate funds for automation and growth. Though the IPO never happened, the bank was formally renamed TPB Bank Plc on January 19, 2017.
Due to their underperformance, the Bank of Tanzania combined Twiga Bancorp and Tanzania Women's Bank into TPB Bank in 2018. TPB was later combined into TIB Commercial Bank Limited in June 2020. These consolidations increased the asset base of the bank to more than 1 trillion Tanzanian Shillings.
The bank changed its name to Tanzania Commercial Bank in June 2021 to more accurately represent its national position. The bank's total assets as of December 2023 were TSh 1.47 trillion, around US$570.36 million.
With a vision "to be the leading bank in Tanzania in the provision of affordable, accessible and convenient financial services," Tanzania Commercial Bank is a bank that offers our clients competitive financial services and values for our stakeholders by means of creative products. Tanzania Commercial Bank is dedicated to achieving, retaining, and developing the highly competent and qualified staff for Tanzania Commercial Bank benefit and the Nation at large as part of organizational development and management of its human resource in an efficient manner.
