Going back to 1967, NBC's origins are in a notable year when the Tanzanian government seized several financial institutions in a bid to seize control of the economy just after the country became independent. This calculated choice set the groundwork for NBC's founding. The revamped and revived National Bank of Commerce (Tanzania) Limited as it is called presently was born from this collaboration.

By 2015, NBC has established a strong financial basis with an asset base more than US$773 million, or almost TSh 1.69 trillion. Ranking fourth in capitalization behind NMB, CRDB Bank, and FBME Bank, this put it among the top-tier commercial banks in the nation.
