ABOUT US
Among the most powerful non-governmental organizations in Africa, Amref Health Africa works especially in underprivileged areas to enhance health results and support health systems. Based in Kenya, Amref has built a strong history of advocating for sustainable, affordable healthcare all over the continent.
Founded as The Flying Doctors of East Africa by Sir Archibald McIndoe, Sir Michael Wood, and Dr. Thomas D. Rees, the organization dates back to 1957. Using tiny planes, the first goal was simple yet ambitious: to provide medical treatment to individuals in distant and inaccessible areas of East Africa. This creative idea gave the company early notice and set the groundwork for its growth into more thorough health solutions.
Amref has expanded its focus beyond direct healthcare delivery by the 1970s. The company started educating Africa-based health professionals since it saw increasing demand for local capabilities. This strategy change toward education improved health systems from the ground up and empowered local communities to take charge of their own health needs.
Rapid expansion and closer cooperation defined a time in the 1980s and 1990s. Amref worked closely with the Ministries of Health in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda and cooperated with international relief agencies. The NGO created and carried out community-based health initiatives stressing HIV/AIDS prevention and control during this period—at a time when the pandemic presented a great public health concern all throughout Africa.
The influence of the company only kept increasing as it approached the twenty-first century. Amref worked with Smile Train, a worldwide non-profit, in the 2000s and 2010s to perform thousands of life-changing reconstructive operations for Africans with cleft lip and cleft palate (CLP). These operations not only changed people's lives but also fixed historical disparities in surgical treatment all throughout various African nations.
Amref's narrative has even drawn interest from international directors. German director Werner Herzog made a documentary called The Flying Doctors of East Africa in 1969 shot on site in Tanzania and Kenya. During its early years, the documentary was essential in increasing worldwide knowledge of the mission of the organization and its life-saving activities.
Amref Health Africa still plays now a key role in public health. Operating in over 35 African nations, it provides services in maternity and child health, reproductive health, water and sanitation, disease prevention, emergency treatment, and many more. The organization stays fervently dedicated to cooperate with people and governments to develop sustainable health solutions fit for the particular requirements of every area.
Amref's unique quality is its steadfast emphasis on evidence-based solutions, local leadership, and community empowerment. It is not only a company that delivers healthcare to individuals; it creates systems and hones abilities so that health may thrive long after the treatments are finished. Amref Health Africa, with decades of experience and a philosophy based on cooperation and creativity, is a genuine champion for health equality all throughout the continent.
Internship Programme
As a research and development foundation, Amref Health Africa recognises the dual benefits that can be derived from internship and volunteer attachment programmes. The organisation, therefore, offers local and international internship and volunteer opportunities. While both volunteer attachments and internships may be part of a learning programme, volunteer opportunities are also offered to out-of-school candidates who may be on sabbatical or who want to contribute to community service.
