ABOUT US

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, known as AB InBev, is a multinational drink and brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium. It is the largest brewer in the world and, in 2023, was ranked 72nd in the Forbes Global 2000. The company has offices in New York City and regional headquarters in São Paulo, London, St. Louis, Mexico City, Bremen, and Johannesburg, among others. AB InBev owns approximately 630 beer brands across 150 countries.

The company was formed through the acquisition of the American company Anheuser-Busch by InBev. AB InBev is a publicly listed company with its primary listing on the Euronext Brussels and secondary listings on the stock exchanges of Mexico City, Johannesburg, and New York.

Interbrew was created in 1987 through the merger of two major Belgian breweries: Artois and Piedboeuf. Artois, previously known as Den Hoorn, was founded in 1366, and Piedboeuf in 1812. Interbrew initially grew by acquiring local breweries in Belgium, then expanded internationally starting in 1991 with a move into Hungary. This was followed by the acquisition of Labatt Brewing Company in 1995, a joint venture in Russia in 1999, and a series of UK and German brewery acquisitions from 2000 to 2003, including Bass, Whitbread, Beck’s & Co., the Gilde Group, and Spaten. In 2002, Interbrew also entered the Chinese market by acquiring stakes in K.K. Brewery and Zhujiang Brewery. It became publicly traded in December 2000 on the Euronext Brussels.

AmBev, short for America Beverages, was established in 1999 from the merger of the two largest Brazilian brewers, Antarctica (founded in 1880) and Brahma (founded in 1886). Based in São Paulo, AmBev became the largest beer company by market capitalization in Brazil and the Southern Hemisphere. It operates in 18 countries and produces beverages like Brahma, Antarctica, Bohemia, and Guaraná Antarctica. AmBev is listed on both the B3 (São Paulo stock exchange) and the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2004, Interbrew and AmBev merged to form InBev. Although its main focus was beer, the company also had a strong presence in Latin America’s soft drink market. Headquartered in Leuven, InBev employed around 89,000 people and operated in more than 30 countries. In 2006, InBev increased its share in Cerveza Quilmes, Argentina’s largest brewer, and in 2007 acquired Lakeport Brewing Company, Canada’s largest discount brewer. The $11.5 billion merger made InBev the world’s largest brewer, combining top brands from Belgium, Canada, Germany, and Brazil.

In 2008, InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch for $52 billion, creating Anheuser-Busch InBev. The acquisition expanded InBev’s global dominance and positioned the combined company among the top five consumer products firms worldwide. Anheuser-Busch, founded in 1852 in St. Louis, Missouri, had been the largest brewing company in the United States, employing over 30,000 people and operating multiple breweries both domestically and internationally. Before the acquisition, it was the largest brewer by revenue but third by volume.

AB InBev’s portfolio includes iconic brands such as Budweiser, Beck’s, Corona, and Stella Artois.
